By Laura Myers / Las Vegas Review-Journal 10-2-2014
The newspaper did not disclose who paid for the poll. Longtime reporter Myers also editorialized that the tax initiative is "headed to defeat." The story headline says "margins tax failing." From her own reportage, the poll in question does not support those assertions, showing a statistical dead heat with 23 percent undecided. This underscores the decades-long taxophobic, anti-union bias of the state's largest newspaper.

WE LOVE LUCY! As political junkies and others of questionable character (which describes most of my fans) learned before the rest of the great unwashed in the Barbwire of Feb. 20, Assemblymember Lucy Flores, D-Las Vegas, will declare her candidacy for Nevada lieutenant governor at 2:00 p.m. PST Saturday, March 1, at the College of Southern Nevada Cheyenne Campus. Does the date imply Lucy is coming in like a lion? Well, she is woman, hear her roar. She will address Washoe Democrats on Tuesday evening, March 4, at DemoHQ, 1465 Terminal Way in Reno. Be well. Raise hell. Esté bien. Haga infierno.

SITE NAVIGATION TIPS: When all else fails, read the instructions

Editor's Note: Many of the news links on this site are from Nevada dailies. In late 2006, the Reno Gannett-Journal began nuking much of its archive. If you encounter any broken links, I encourage you to contact them and send me a copy. On the one hand, they want to build their web traffic in order to increase the price of ads. On the other hand, they are killing that very traffic. Far be it from me to reconcile the Dilbert-style motivations of an outfit for which a 38 percent net profit is not enough. If you can explain it, please enlighten me. (Before you e-mail me anything complicated, please read this bulletinAB) UPDATE: In early 2008, the Las Vegas Sun "upgraded " its website, nuking more than a dozen years of links. If you find an orphaned Sun story, search their site for the title.

From Poor Denny's Almanac
On Jan. 28, 1968, responding to a complaint filed by the American Federation of Casino and Gaming Employees, the National Labor Relations Board upheld a hearing examiner's decision ordering some Las Vegas casinos to rehire 42 casino workers, halt anti-union activities, and post notices telling workers they would no longer be penalized for union activity.

As of October 1, 2013, a Nevada job applicant's credit history cannot be used to impact a hiring decision. Senate Bill 127 makes it illegal for employers to condition employment on someone's credit information and stops the longtime practice of requiring credit reports by many organizations. Some exceptions apply. Click here to read the law and its legislative history.

(Before you e-mail me, please read this bulletinAB) UPDATE: In early 2008, the Las Vegas Sun "upgraded " its website, nuking more than a dozen years of links. If you find an orphaned Sun story, search their site for the title.

"Washoe Med: This community has been snookered!"
—From a Reno Gazette-Journal editorial

DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN — Washoe Med (now Renown) nurses picket during a one-day strike on 6-23-2001. The issues were the same as during a 1990 organizing drive and remain today: Understaffing which erodes patient care so that the conglomerate may profit and proliferate on the backs of health care consumers and taxpayers.

We welcome your suggestions for additional newslinks to this page.
E-mail them (including URLs) to our webmaster

Editor's Note: Many of the news links on this site are from Nevada dailies. In late 2006, the Reno Gannett-Journal began nuking much of its archive. If you encounter any broken links, I encourage you to contact them and send me a copy. On the one hand, they want to build their web traffic in order to increase the price of ads. On the other hand, they are killing that very traffic. Far be it from me to reconcile the Dilbert-style motivations of an outfit for which a 38 percent net profit is not enough. If you can explain it, please enlighten me. (Before you e-mail me, please read this bulletinAB)
UPDATE: In early 2008, the Las Vegas Sun "upgraded " its website, nuking more than a dozen years of links. If you find an orphaned Sun story, search their site for the title.
