NOMINEE GUY RICHARDSON INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME |
What do
broke Baby Boomers and Central American refugee children have in common?
The future of the U.S. workforce.
It's been a whipsaw couple of weeks
for local chamber of commerce tightbutts.
On July 7, the one and only New York Times published a puff piece about
this region licking its collective chops, lusting for the purported Tesla
battery plant.
The Reno Gazette-Journal added
several sycophantic fantasies. (See
last week's Barbwire.)
On July 10, the Reno News & Review disclosed credible research which
reviewed every state from 1970 through 2010.
Not only are we down in the dregs with rustbelt Michigan, we've crashed out of the bottom of the keg.
Nevada alone demonstrated a consistent
four-decade downhill slide in education and community indicators. (See
last week's Barbwire.)
Last Sunday, the RGJ reported that the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors
Authority has blown big bucks while failing to attract any motion picture
business despite the state's new corporate welfare subsidy.
Meanwhile, Gomorrah South has scored
big.
Apparently, we're so inept we can't even give away tax money.
In the grandest tradition of "never give a inch," RSCVA engineered
a red-herring PR countersplash touting lots of new projected convention business.
(Solicited using taxpayer money, of course.)
Now comes the unkindest cut of all. The August edition of prestigious 164 year-old
Harper's Magazine presents a devastating vision of America's future.
Happening right here. Right now.
Get used to the word "workampers," perpetually itinerant senior citizens
who live in rickety motorhomes and travel trailers to work seasonally nationwide.
Amazon calls them its "camperforce"
while "history-minded commentators have labeled them the Okies of the Great
Recession," according to Harper's, "geriatric migrant labor...downwardly
mobile older Americans" in "ephemeral company towns."
Amazon comes off like a brutal plantation. [1]
Makes me wonder if Tesla will want
Amazon for a neighbor out there in Mustang Ranch country east of Sparks.
DONDERO D-DAY IS TODAY. I've been campaigning
for more than a year to get legendary Nevada photographer Don Dondero
inducted into the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame.
The deadline for nominations was
July 15 and packets to NPA voters go out in a matter of hours.
If you or any of your friends want to ante into the game, NOW is the time. Send
endorsement e-mails to NPA Executive Director Barry Smith at <nevadapress@att.net>
Please copy me for posting in the
Dondero section of NevadaLabor.com/
Barbwire readers got the late Reno Gazette-Journal columnist Guy
Richardson elected in his first year of nomination in 2012.
Please help me make it two in a row.

of humor), treat yourself to multiple

TOO LEGIT TO QUIT. The Barbwire's ongoing investigation of phony Nevada graduation rates, now in its third year, just got respectable. (Scroll down to Hiding in Plain Sight.)
Read it and weep, then review
the series for yourself.
TOAST
ALERT. Teachers' union
gross profits tax petition supporters and opponents would do well to review
the Barbwire
of Feb. 28, 2013.
Passage of the tax initiative could
easily lead to a successful court challenge that would at the same time blow
out not only the revenue hike, but also term limits and the state's worst anti-union
laws. Something for everybody. [UPDATE]

Now come queries about ballot questions. The Jan. 30 column brought a surge of inquiries about the Nevada State Education Association corporate tax petition on this November's ballot.

The medium that shapes public opinion needs at least one refuge where it is not filtered through the distorted green eye shades of prissy corporate accountants for whom profit is the only priority; where self-censorship is the journalist's normal work environment and where all sins of omission are tacitly encouraged and forgiven with the wave of a balance sheet.
This is important.
We've got work to do.
