Maybe Nevada legislative Republicans pushed Harry Reid over the edge.

They scheduled Reid's address to a joint session on April Fool's Day.

Who let that through? Did some dingbat Washington underling forget what happens April 1? Is that person still employed?

Maybe it gave the good senator a bad case of Eddy Arnold Syndrome.

One morning long ago, Arnold came down from his Las Vegas hotel suite only to be ambushed by a bevy of tourists.

He patiently signed autographs for a half-hour, then excused himself, leaving some in line.

"Mr. Arnold, you owe it to your fans to stay here!" a woman loudly hissed.

The ever-gracious country superstar called her aside and whispered "lady, I'm old, I'm rich and I don't have to give a dam."

Exhibiting brilliant Sherlockian logic, I figured Sen. Reid, D-Searchlight, might arrive a day before the Carson speech and I might thus book him for Tuesday evening's César Chávez Celebration at Circus Circus.

No dice. Conflicting engagement.

Fortunately, Barbwire spies are everywhere.

I was reliably informed that the other appointment was just six blocks from the hotel and would conclude just before the Chávez thing got rolling.

I told my insider that Sen. Reid could drive to the hotel, be quickly escorted inside by a passel of union guys, shake a few hands, say a few words and be gone before sunset.

Then came intel that he might not come to town at all. Then he announced he's hanging up his spurs.

Maybe the April Fool's Day diss was his Eddy Arnold moment. I know I couldn't live like him where much of your life is spent on planes shuttling between DC and God-knows-where.

You get tired.

A very successful defense attorney before getting elected, he has amassed more money than he can ever spend.

However, he apparently forgot Nevada's unwritten political blood oath: If you are fortunate enough to win election to the U.S. Senate, dying in office is part of the job.

Democrat Patrick McCarran set the template, falling to a heart attack in Hawthorne in 1954.

Small states only acquire power when their lawmakers accrue seniority.

Reid is inarguably the most powerful elected official Nevada has ever produced.

He has at times been politically foolhardy, such as inhibiting construction of dirty coal-fired power plants in depressed White Pine County just before the 2010 election.

It cost him thousands of construction worker and big biz votes. He won anyway.

So what am I gonna do for a headliner Tuesday night?

Any heavy hitter wishing to declare for Congress or Senate will get podium priority. If Sen. Reid's in town, he will still be most welcome. [UPDATE: Sen. Reid cancelled the April 1 speech.]

But before this Barbwire hits the street, I will have invited my beloved whom I have never met, Assemblymember Michele Fiore, R-Gomorrah South, the Madonna/Sarah Palin/Lady Gaga of Nevada.

I hope Circus Circus security will allow her to carry her guns and tasers.

MYERS: Nevadans may well wonder why one of the state’s biggest and most familiar problems could be ignored so assiduously for decades, like an elephant in the room. In the end, the explanation comes down to a rule of thumb for politicians: Offending the affluent comes with consequences. Offending the working poor does not.

He also posits a tax solution which liberals may find quite surprising. (I resemble that remark.)

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY: FEEL UP YOUR FIRE METER. The Reno Gazette-Journal did big spreads on three consecutive Sundays (Sept. 14, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28) on NV Energy smart meter fires. Welcome aboard.

FIRE METER UPDATES: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment —> If your smart meter feels very hot, not just from sunshine, call 911.

In its Sunday 21 Dec. 2014 front page headline major story, the Reno Gazette-Journal published results of the NVEnergy-commissioned "don't worry, be happy" echo study.

On 1-27-2015, the RGJ published an analysis based on veteran reporter Anjeanette Damon's review of more than 1,000 pages of documents. Barbwire bottom line: NVE handles this like auto manufacturers handle defects —> It's cheaper to pay legal settlements after people are injured or killed than to fix the problem.

Don'tcha worry 'bout a thing! If you can't trust your power company, who can you trust?

DIDN'T THEY MAKE A MOVIE CALLED "THE INCREDIBLES"? On 2-6-2015, the RGJ reported that the Public Utilities Commission has ordered NVE to hire an independent laboratory to review the material.
