So said Napolean two centuries ago.

A plethora of otherwise smart people are actually spending big money to destroy their own political campaigns, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. (If that's their desire, I'll be happy to snatch for half price.)

The fun thing about follytix is that strategy cannot be kept secret and oftimes openly morphs into madcap George Bushian strategery.

State Sen. Ben Kieckhefer, R-Reno, is airing smarmy TV spots about GOP primary opponent Gary Schmidt whose crimes appear to be that he was once a Democrat and once filed for office in the foreign Lyon County hamlet of Dayton.

Zounds.

Republican Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, after saying he would endorse no replacement, last week announced his support of the only Democrat in the race who openly admits to loathing the Democratic Party.

Why? Because they've got a poll showing Cashell's pick-to-click crashing.

I haven't seen any surveys, but such strategeries tell me Schmidt is looking senatorial and Cashell's pal's Pez dispenser is empty.

Hizzoner earlier groused that the one candidate he would not support is George "Eddie" Lorton, who filed the lawsuit that exterminated the mayoral aspirations of four councilcritters now terminated by term limits.

Crazy Eddie is running a kickass TV spot fanning populist flames about REMSA, the monopoly for-profit ambulance service which often expensively duplicates the emergency response of understaffed local fire departments.

Artist Erik Holland is the only other mayoral candidate saying anything substantial.

Lorton's got the best ad of the season (Holland can't afford any) so far, with all due respect to Chicken Chiquita Sue Lowden taking light-guv opponent Mark Hutchison out of the closet as a (gasp!) trial lawyer.

The comedy of errors has resulted in two previously unheralded candidates running to the front for Reno mayor, with one potential dark horse who might do surprisingly well.

I may publish a prediction via my soon-to-launch Barbwire Confidential hush-hush subscription service.

In another major race, I will definitely issue a forecast you can take to the bank.

You can win some bar bets if you're willing to get out a bottle of antacids and watch strategery TV.

PIXELATED POLITIX. The Ides of May installment of this column developed a life of its own online.

I trust it helped shame the Reno newspaper and its corporate co-conspirator, KNPB TV-5, into allowing all 18 Biggest Little City mayoral candidates into May 29 primetime.

The May 15 piece brought the usual attaboys and angry brickbats, albeit a near-record number of testy requests for e-mail list deletions.

As the late great Travus T. Hipp once opined, "if you've got all sides mad at you, you're doing something right."

We lost him in May 2012, but his words live on, his wisdom abides, and when politics is providing millions of laughs for millions of dollars, never interfere.

TOO LEGIT TO QUIT. The Barbwire's ongoing investigation of phony Nevada graduation rates, now in its third year, just got respectable. (Scroll down to Hiding in Plain Sight.) Read it and weep, then review the series for yourself.

TOAST ALERT. Teachers' union tax petition supporters and opponents would do well to review the Barbwire of Feb. 28, 2013.

Passage of the tax initiative could easily lead to a successful court challenge that would at the same time blow out not only the revenue hike, but also term limits and the state's worst anti-union laws. Something for everybody. [UPDATE]
