More recently, you will find proof that three Nevada school superintendents — Heath "The Music Man" Morrison, Dwight Jones and Pedro Martinez — have cooked the books on graduation rate increases.

Morrison hisself even admitted it to the Charlotte Observer long before the large Nevada papers realized they'd been shucked.

This column was a year ahead of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and fully two years ahead of the Reno Gazette-Journal.

On July 10, the Reno News & Review called for the firing of Washoe school boss Martinez over his axing of longtime school district police chief Mike Mieras.

The school board tried to oblige on July 22 but muffed both the PR and apparently legal requirements, kinda like Martinez did with Mieras.

On last Monday's Nevada Newsmakers, Truckee Meadows Community College poly-sci Prof. Fred Lokken echoed this column, criticizing those who have played the race card without evidence and opportunists with their own self-serving agendas.

BRINGING HEAT IN THE DAY. Protests of the police killing of unarmed Missouri black teenager Michael Brown will be held Thursday afternoon, part of a National Moment of Silence scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PDT (23:00 GMT).

In Carson City, the Progressive Leadership Alliance will assemble in front of the state capitol. The Reno-Sparks NAACP will gather peaceful demonstrators on the Liberty Street side of the Bruce Thompson Federal Courthouse at S. Virginia and Liberty in downtown Reno.

Brown was gunned down Saturday by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb.

On the Monday PBS News Hour, Sherrilyn Ifill of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund stated "If you look at the statistics involving arrests, stops and so forth in that town prepared by their police department, African-Americans are the subject of 90 percent of the stops, whether in vehicles, whether on the street, whether on local roads, whether on the highway. And, interestingly, however, the greatest amount of contraband that’s found happens with stops of white residents."

The NAACP led marches at the federal courthouse last summer protesting the Florida Trayvon Martin killing and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. The NAACP's monthly meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Rita Cannan School. Members will vote on whether or not to endorse the Nevada State Education Association's business gross profits tax initiative.

They will also get an update on Washoe County School District issues, a recurring agenda item. The school is located on the cusp of Reno and Sparks on Silverada Blvd. at Cannan Street.

TOAST ALERT. Teachers' union gross profits tax petition supporters and opponents would do well to review the Barbwire of Feb. 28, 2013.

Passage of the tax initiative could easily lead to a successful court challenge that would at the same time blow out not only the revenue hike, but also term limits and the state's worst anti-union laws. Something for everybody.
