Despite all the grousing and glad-handing, Gov. Brian Sandoval and state lawmakers didn't move the education spending needle much, if at all. (Barbwire 7-7-2015)

Nevada increased annual per-pupil funding by a whopping $34 to $84 per student, depending on how you slice the hog. Adjusted for inflation, we've actually gone backward. More soon — worse.

WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION. I remain amused by Gov. Veto El Obtúsè's wasteful TV campaign to convince teens to "just say no" to sex

Nancy Reagan's "just say no" to drugs promptly ended that societal problem in the 1980's, right?

Taking a cue from Sandoval and the infamous Koch Brothers, Chevron just started a TV schedule touting the company's sparkling support of science education.

They don't mention global warming or their industry's multi-billion dollar campaign trashing it as a hoax.

RUBBING IT IN. Within days of passing his education and taxation package, the guv became a TV pitchman for some out-of-state online university, a competitor to state schools. Go figger.

JUST SAY NO, PART DEUX. Last week, the Gomorrah South school board killed any discussion about its sex education policy until fall, another manifestation of the school-choice trend.

Makes sense. The kids can get all the sex-ed they want at market rates on the Las Vegas Strip. Now that's fiscal conservatism.

WHAT TO DO IN PRISON? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was entirely correct last week when he advocated remedial education for the incarcerated. Prisons can provide matchless hands-on training in teamwork and problem solving. Witness the recent well-executed escapes from New York's and Mexico's maximum lockups.

Herewith, valedictories from the striped jumpsuit lost column which corporate newspapers refused to print.

DRUG OVERLORD EL CHAPO: "They'll never catch me at Burning Man. When the heat dies down, I'll apply at a Wall Street bank or a tobacco company. I admire guys who steal billions and never go to jail. I must remember to renew my National Rifle Association membership."

THE NEW YORK SHAWSHANKERS: "Honest, warden, we got lost while trying to avoid a riot by fixing the prison WiFi system that fizzled just before the premiere of Orange is the New Black."

FOLLYTIX '16. As I predicted several months ago, former Las Vegas Assemblymember Moose Arberry will shortly jump into the crowded Democratic primary for the central/southern Nevada (District 4) congressional seat now held by Republican Cresent Hardy.

DEVIL VS. DEEP BLUE SEA DEPT. Gomorrah South Republicans just elected their first openly gay county chairman who beat a Rand Paul Libertarian anarchist by eight votes.

SPARKS, SOUTH CAROLINA. Last Friday evening, a very credible African-American leader witnessed "about 10 to 15 trucks in a Spanish Springs shopping center, some with Confederate flags and some with American flags. I drove right up to them by accident. We stared at each other and I drove off. One with American flags followed me to the parking lot exit. Some were parked and some drove around revving their engines. Overall, such a startling scene."

Serious education needed.

65 YEARS OF KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. Read Tribune alumnus Dennis Myers' tour de force about a tour de farce in the Feb. 5 Reno News & Review. His cover story "No Fair" provides a quick and vicious history lesson about Nevada government failing to take care of its people.

MYERS: Nevadans may well wonder why one of the state’s biggest and most familiar problems could be ignored so assiduously for decades, like an elephant in the room. In the end, the explanation comes down to a rule of thumb for politicians: Offending the affluent comes with consequences. Offending the working poor does not.

He also posits a tax solution which liberals may find quite surprising. (I resemble that remark.) Myers once again looks positively psychic. Actually, he just reads history.

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY: FEEL UP YOUR FIRE METER. The Reno Gazette-Journal did big spreads on three consecutive Sundays (Sept. 14, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28) on NV Energy smart meter fires. Welcome aboard. FIRE METER UPDATES: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment —> If your smart meter feels very hot, not just from sunshine, call 911.

In its Sunday 21 Dec. 2014 front page headline major story, the Reno Gazette-Journal published results of the NVEnergy-commissioned "don't worry, be happy" echo study. On 1-27-2015, the RGJ published an analysis based on veteran reporter Anjeanette Damon's review of more than 1,000 pages of documents. Barbwire bottom line: NVE handles this like auto manufacturers handle defects —> It's cheaper to pay legal settlements after people are injured or killed than to fix the problem.

Don'tcha worry 'bout a thing! If you can't trust your power company, who can you trust?

DIDN'T THEY MAKE A MOVIE CALLED "THE INCREDIBLES"? On 2-6-2015, the RGJ reported that the Public Utilities Commission has ordered NVE to hire an independent laboratory to review the material. UPDATE: The report said all is well. I still recommend feeling up your fire meter on a regular basis.
