Last week's Barbwire about toxic turf at Sparks' Golden Eagle Park exposed a bad situation which now appears worse.

According to the University of Nevada-Reno athletic department, Mackay Stadium, the Peccole Park baseball diamond and Wolf Pack Park all use crumb rubber made from used tires.

Washoe County appears largely clean, although its one briar patch is close to kids.

"We have a small area within an internal courtyard at the Jan Evans Juvenile Detention Facility which does contain the rubberized pellets as a cushioning agent," according to community services director David M. Solaro.

The crumbs keep the green petroleum product looking like grass.

Without the pellets, the false blades would matt, which is why the turf needs churning which kicks up a dark dust.

Tires contain a Pandora's box of chemicals including lead, especially dangerous to non-adults.

One Reno park has a small patch of artificial turf but it's not the crumb rubber variety.

The manufacturer touts it as free of used tires.

Last Saturday's big-school state championship semi-final game at Reed High was played on good old brown high desert grass.

The Raiders may have lost to Gomorrah South's Bishop Gorman pro-football program, but at least everyone in attendance wasn't inhaling toxic tire byproducts.

I'm waiting for school district info.

HELP WANTED. If Sparks City Hall gets its way, in a few weeks anybody with a pulse can get a job as a plumber or electrician, no training or experience necessary.

Without any council comment, Mayor Geno Martini forwarded repeal of journeyman licensing for action on Dec. 14. (City Hall's previously published date was incorrect.)

Public commentary ran six against and three in favor, seven against if you count plumbing contractor and Assemblymember Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, who advised waiting to see what Reno does.

I was amazed by repeal supporter Don Paschall of Zephyr Plumbing who said his employees, "whites and Mexican," don't read but they can read plans.

Don Tatro of the Builders Association of Northern Nevada asserted that repeal is warranted because "there's been no violation for 23 years."

Actually, City Hall admits failure to enforce the law for 23 years. Mr. Tatro's citing lack of enforcement as justification was the same as saying speeding violations would cease if cops would just stop issuing tickets.

Tatro went on to state that "28 percent of workers have no diploma and must provide for their families," adding that state and federal law are enough. So much for all the talk about the need for an educated workforce in the dawning age of Tesla.

I don't know about you, but I sure wouldn't live in a place plumbed and wired by me.

FIRE METER UPDATES: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment —> If your smart meter feels very hot, not just from sunshine, call 911.

In its Sunday 21 Dec. 2014 front page headline major story, the Reno Gazette-Journal published results of the NVEnergy-commissioned "don't worry, be happy" echo study. On 1-27-2015, the RGJ published an analysis based on veteran reporter Anjeanette Damon's review of more than 1,000 pages of documents. Barbwire bottom line: NVE handles this like auto manufacturers handle defects —> It's cheaper to pay legal settlements after people are injured or killed than to fix the problem.

Don'tcha worry 'bout a thing! If you can't trust your power company, who can you trust?

DIDN'T THEY MAKE A MOVIE CALLED "THE INCREDIBLES"? On 2-6-2015, the RGJ reported that the Public Utilities Commission has ordered NVE to hire an independent laboratory to review the material. UPDATE: The report said all is well. I still recommend feeling up your fire meter on a regular basis.

The preliminary data found 96 chemicals in synthetic turf, and many of them are carcinogenic. The nonprofit Environment and Human Health Inc., (EHHI) made up of 10 physicians and public health professionals, (many of whom are on the Yale Medical School faculty), studied the harmful effects of synthetic turf for over nine years — and their conclusion is that these fields are toxic. EHHI recommended a moratorium on installing synthetic turf fields in 2007 because of the carcinogens in the fields, but the recommendation was not adopted. EHHI said at that time that we would start to see cancers among our student athletes who have played on synthetic fields in about 10 years. It has now been about 10 years and we are indeed seeing cancers develop — especially among soccer players. In fact, the soccer playing goalkeepers are the most heavily impacted with lymphomas and leukemias. With 127 lymphomas and leukemias reported among soccer players — 85 of these are goalkeepers. Both those cancers are environmentally influenced....
