NOMINEE GUY RICHARDSON INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME |
In follytix, facts matter far less than their presentation.
For example, please choose between
the following lunches: Succulent, wafer-thin hickory-smoked ham, piled a
mile high on sweet rye or a swine sandwich?
Same thing. Different presentation.
Fortunately for us professional pigstickers, political campaigns must present
their packages on the street every day.
Full frontal nudity can be embarrassing, so the fatcats hide their dirty work
behind public relations and law firms whose job it is to stick gimlets in the
ribs of the disfavored without leaving a trace.
It's thus easy for old hands like me to see who's doing what, with which and
to whom without belonging to the barnyard animal insiders club. (I'm allergic
to cats.)
Last week, I deconstructed Tesla's
cynical PR strategy to play Nevada for a sucker.
Now let's see what recent events reveal about how the gambling-industrial complex
intends to maintain control of all aspects of local government.
Keep in mind that much of that power is exerted by heavily-funded bodies several
steps removed from public accountability.
The Regional Transportation Commission, airport, convention and water authorities
are earmarked empires ensuring that big business remains heavily subsidized
by the little guy.
Sparks City Hall just threw itself a flotation device. The mayor and council
recently pushed through a minor but maximum allowable property tax increase
and a sewer fee hike.
Local streets are beginning to tell a story reminiscent of the status quo ante,
the pot-holed 1980s when populist politicians were kept in the minority until
the big biz dictatorships began about 20 years ago. (See In
search of the modern day Barbara Bennett, April 3.)
Which brings me to the current race for Reno mayor. Hillary Schieve is
a registered non-partisan, Ray Pezonella is a Democrat who disavows his
party. (So it's really the Democrats who have no ante into the game.)
Both tout their business cred.
Would a Schieve win bring a reversion to the Barbara Bennett 1980s, only with
a populist majority at last?
If she represents the status quo ante, then Pezonella is the status quo uncle, a promise to continue on the inevitable road to financial ruin. But with a smile worthy of termed-out Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.
If corporate welfare and New York
and European banks must take precedence over parks, schools, roads, police and
fire, then faith in the service providers must be eroded.
What, you think all the recent bad publicity hitting Reno firefighters resulted
from the work of intrepid journalists?
You think the full court press against
the teachers union gross profits tax initiative represents a spontaneous public
outcry?
Learn how to recognize professional spoonfeeding.
The ideal of minimum-wage public
employees means less pressure to tax fatcats.
Nevada PR shills are very, very good at what they do.

HONOR YOUR DON. Campaign season is upon us. I'm working to elect legendary Nevada photographer Don Dondero (1920-2003) for the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame.
His life's work appeared worldwide, including the Tribune and most probably every newspaper in Nevada.
Enlist in the campaign to install Big Don.
Please send me your memories and endorsements via e-mail or to P.O. Box 10034, Reno NV 89510. The deadline is the end of this month, so get it on.
The Barbwire got the late Reno Gazette-Journal columnist Guy Richardson elected in 2012.

TOO LEGIT
TO QUIT. The Barbwire's
ongoing investigation of phony Nevada graduation rates, now in its third year,
just got respectable. (Scroll down to Hiding in Plain Sight.) Read
it and weep, then review the series
for yourself.
TOAST ALERT.
Teachers' union tax petition
supporters and opponents would do well to review the Barbwire
of Feb. 28, 2013.
Passage of the tax initiative could
easily lead to a successful court challenge that would at the same time blow
out not only the revenue hike, but also term limits and the state's worst anti-union
laws. Something for everybody. [UPDATE]

A thousand thanks to those who already responded and keep sending show suggestions. Current frontrunners include (pardon the pun) wild mustangs as canned goods, education and i-Guns with César Chávez in Nevada recently surging.
Now come queries about ballot questions. The Jan. 30 column brought a surge of inquiries about the Nevada State Education Association corporate tax petition on this November's ballot.
Stay tuned

The medium that shapes public opinion needs at least one refuge where it is not filtered through the distorted green eye shades of prissy corporate accountants for whom profit is the only priority; where self-censorship is the journalist's normal work environment and where all sins of omission are tacitly encouraged and forgiven with the wave of a balance sheet.
This is important.
