The
Barbwire's Greatest Hits |
Take a mugshot of incoming Nevada Assembly Speaker Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, place it next to actor Bryan Cranston in character from the monster series Breaking Bad and you'll have a hard time telling them apart.
Who's,,,
|
...Who?
|
A perfect "separated at birth" juxtaposition.
In his highly honored role, Cranston played Walter White, a mild-mannered New Mexico high school chemistry teacher desperate for money whose life was falling apart.
He got into the lucrative business of drug production and became a ruthless overlord.
Critics have rated the series a cut above The Sopranos as greatest of all time. (All in the Family retains my vote.)
Former Tribune columnist Ira
isn't as toxic as his fictional relative, but he's been working on it.
Ira is a good writer and very bright man.
I liked being on the same Sunday editorial page with him, Jake Highton and the late great Travus T. Hipp.
Hard right, hard left and maverick,
they made me look flat-out reasonable.
Alas and alack, Ira is an overt bigot, racist and homophobe who also tortures
little animals for days in his animal traps.
These are not exaggerations. The Barbwire never forgets and I've published the evidence in Ira's own words.
Can achieving high office and political power change the leopard's spots?
I hope so and I'm willing to talk. (The meeting I requested in 1996 has yet to happen.)
But those close to Ira say he remains
the very definition of conservatism, opposed to any change, including in himself.
Pray for salvation and stay tuned.
MILKING THE COW. Former Reno City Councilcritter
Dwight "The Thug" Dortch was the highest paid of the city hall
seven in the past year.
Dortch made $168,000 on a $68,000
base salary. Adding 30 percent for benefits brings the total to just under a
hundred grand. (I remember when the Reno City Council paid less than minimum
wage for the hours expended.)
So how did Dortch reach financial Valhalla?
Turns out that councilcrittters get extra money for serving on boards that are already part of their job.
There's a state law prohibiting public
employees from accepting additional pay for the position for which they are
hired. Major sport coaches get around it by hosting player clinics and radio/tv
shows.
Dortch sat on two of the most lucrative panels, the Regional Transportation
Commission and the Airport Authority.
However, the golden goose belonged
to Councilwoman Neoma Jardon for sitting on, believe it or else, the
county health board.
No wonder so many people are interested in applying for the current council
vacancy.
JUST LIKE COUNT DRACULA. Voter I.D. will be back big time, ushered
in on the batwings of the last standing concrete blonde, Secretary of State-elect
Barbara Cegavske.
The NAACP rightly criticized her predecessor, Ross Miller, for a milder version of voter I.D. during last year's legislature.
While the defrocked crown prince billed it as a way to head off more restrictive measures, others viewed it as a sop to the moonhowlers ahead of an election year when he would move up to attorney general.
Oops.
As this year's voting proved, pseudo-conservatives don't win. Kate Marshall and Jill Derby found that out when they sought the forever GOP-gerrymandered northern congressional seat.
Cegavske is the last of the Three Blondiegoats Gruff. Las Vegas Republican Sens. Sandra Tiffany and Ann O'Connell are now long gone. Tiffany got hung up in an E-Bay scandal where her company was involved in selling surplus state autos, a bit of a conflict of interest. O'Connell was beaten in a Republican primary by Dr. Joe Heck who was supported by organized labor, which detested O'Connel, which knocked Heck off four years later but inadvertently launched a successful career. Heck just won a new term in Congress.
Be careful what you wish for.
Her soul sisters are long gone, but Cegavske will now haunt us statewide for years to come.

ONLINE EXTRAS...
TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY: FEEL UP YOUR FIRE METER. The Reno Gazette-Journal did big spreads on three consecutive Sundays (Sept. 14, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28) on NV Energy smart meter fires. Welcome aboard. Barbwire readers were two years ahead on the fire meter issue. (Touch a Smart Meter, Go to Jail 11 October 2012)
[UPDATE: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment.]

Stay tuned.
I encourage you to donate to the cause at Barbwire.TV/
The medium that shapes public opinion needs at least one refuge where it is not filtered through the distorted green eye shades of prissy corporate accountants for whom profit is the only priority; where self-censorship is the journalist's normal work environment and where all sins of omission are tacitly encouraged and forgiven with the wave of a balance sheet.
This is important. We've got a lot
of work to do.
