I thanked the almighty that Nevada was not so plagued.

Alas, as Voltaire said, "God is a comedian playing to an audience afraid to laugh."

The joke's on me.

The plague has spread northward: Mixing guns with school kids makes them safer — kids, not guns. Likewise barreling down highways at 80 mph or more. Also segregating the different, leaving incest victims pregnant and having unscreened strangers pick up children at school.

When is a taxi not a taxi? When Uber acts like the mining industry and hires cadres of juice lobbyists to make it so, another gold-digging bandido exempt from regulation.

Which is why Madonna Long flew home from Pennsylvania last week.

The beautiful girl from Battle Mountain took first runnerup in the 1986 Miss Wheelchair Nevada pageant.

She became close friends with the winner, Donna Cline, who went on to become a Las Vegas news anchor and Miss Wheelchair America.

Donna was paralyzed in the 1978 rollover near Hawthorne that killed my wife's daughter Debra Donlevy (Carson High '77). Emergency services in rural Nevada remain lethal. ("Fatal Conservatism," Barbwire 4-2-2006 and updates)

Donna inspired Madonna to become an advocate and she's awesome.

"Uber will be the end of accessible transportation for the disabled," Madonna told me.

Trained taxi drivers will become unemployed thanks to dingbats like Sens. Scott Hammond, R-Gomorrah South, and James Settelmeyer, R-Minden.

Hammond actually told Madonna that Uber could hire people with disabilities who have accessible vehicles or just borrow them.

Unfortunately, wheelchairs don't come in one-size-fits-all.

"My chair was made for my disability," Madonna bristles. "My vehicle cost $60,000 and is customized for me. I'm supposed to let some stranger use it for $6.00?"

She says "Nevadans need to know their senators are making a deal with the devil," adding that Senate Bill 439 violates federal law. The Uber-alles legislation was killed on a party-line vote (Democrats nay, Republicans yea), then miraculously resurrected. (See juice lobbyists, above.)

In 1999, Donna Cline died young at 40 in Texas. She rolled with giants including Barbara Jordan and helped launch a disability cable network. Her passing was mourned on Gov. Bush's website.

Madonna Long is a major part of her legacy. SB439 insults it.

A March federal court decision against Yellow Cab of Reno drives Uber closer to desperation.

Representing a disabled woman, civil rights attorney Terri Keyser-Cooper won a ruling that a cab driver is an employee, not an independent contractor shielding a company from liability.

MYERS: Nevadans may well wonder why one of the state’s biggest and most familiar problems could be ignored so assiduously for decades, like an elephant in the room. In the end, the explanation comes down to a rule of thumb for politicians: Offending the affluent comes with consequences. Offending the working poor does not.

He also posits a tax solution which liberals may find quite surprising. (I resemble that remark.)

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY: FEEL UP YOUR FIRE METER. The Reno Gazette-Journal did big spreads on three consecutive Sundays (Sept. 14, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28) on NV Energy smart meter fires. Welcome aboard.

FIRE METER UPDATES: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment —> If your smart meter feels very hot, not just from sunshine, call 911.

In its Sunday 21 Dec. 2014 front page headline major story, the Reno Gazette-Journal published results of the NVEnergy-commissioned "don't worry, be happy" echo study.

On 1-27-2015, the RGJ published an analysis based on veteran reporter Anjeanette Damon's review of more than 1,000 pages of documents. Barbwire bottom line: NVE handles this like auto manufacturers handle defects —> It's cheaper to pay legal settlements after people are injured or killed than to fix the problem.

Don'tcha worry 'bout a thing! If you can't trust your power company, who can you trust?

DIDN'T THEY MAKE A MOVIE CALLED "THE INCREDIBLES"? On 2-6-2015, the RGJ reported that the Public Utilities Commission has ordered NVE to hire an independent laboratory to review the material. UPDATE: The report said all is well. I still recommend feeling up your fire meter on a regular basis
