Back to the Future —> Nevadans enjoy living in the past

One look at the headlines hereinbelow and you will never again be able to say that Nevada doesn't care about education. We care a lot. We're just not willing to pay for it.

Getting somebody else to cover our markers was originally supposed to be the whole point of a gambling/tourism-based economy. Gambling constitutes the voluntary taxation of mostly somebody else's citizens. That's how follyticians find it so easy to go into partnership with the addictive vices—>booze, nicotine and other drugs both somewhat legal and sometimes illegal, sexual exploitation, the casting of lots and the rape and pillage of our lands, skies and waters.
W.C. Fields once warned that "I will bend every effort to win and I come from a long line of effort benders."
The gambling-industrial complex has bent us over, but good. Along with its fellow exploitive...er...extractive industry, mining, they have proven to be masterful tax avoiders, privatizing prurient profit while sadistically socializing their risk. No wonder I've been getting more anti-social the longer I've lived here.
This latter-day Don Quixote is now riding into his sixth decade of tilting at pretty much the same auld windmills. (See the War Rooms, below).
I welcome newcomers, Sancho or otherwise. We need all the help we can get. But unless you dwell in the upper-middle or higher-income classes, you should really look toward moving somewhere else to educate your children.
We possess the devices with which to cure our vices, we just choose not to.
At Reno's Depression Deli in 1982, I said Nevada would eventually have to make a choice between becoming a for-real modern state or reverting back to the popular image we've never been able to shake, that of a wild west boomtown mining camp. We enjoy living in the romantic and largely mythological past. Recent decades (actually since 1981) have seen us plunge headlong toward the 19th Century.
To bend a cliché, Nevada really has just two kinds of people—>Ask yourself if you're part of the problem or part of the solution. Alas, most of us partake in both. So don't answer that one. Answer this: For what purpose do you think you ended up here in the High Desert Outback of the American Dream?
Foolishly and fortunately, Don Quixotes and Sancho Panzas never take the advice foisted onto them countless times over endless time: Dream more impossible dreams but fight fewer unbeatable foes. And so it goes.
What a long, strange trip it's been.
Be well. Raise hell. / Esté bien. Haga infierno.

Admiration and apologies to Pablo Picasso.

Everybody knows the dice are loaded.
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed.
Everybody knows the war is over.
Everybody knows the good guys lost.
Everybody knows the fight was fixed.
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich.
   That's how it goes.
Everybody knows...
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
   What everybody knows...
   Everybody talking to their pockets.
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
   and a long red rose.
   Everybody knows. Everybody knows.
That's how it goes.
Everybody knows.

Reno-Sparks NAACP efforts result in 2 nominations among 7 finalists for Reno Gazette-Journal Citizen of the Year Award
By Editorial Page Editor Brett McGinness
Reno Gazette-Journal / Sunday 12-24-2017

Former four-time Reno-Sparks NAACP President Lonnie Feemster's tireless activism in the Yerington High School racism case has won local and national attention. Swope Middle School teacher Todd Bodensteiner had his students write to the abused Yerington teens who visited his Reno class. Mr. Bodensteiner is now a Citizen of the Year finalist as is the late Reno-Sparks NAACP Executive Committee Member Darryl Feemster, Sr. (1962-2017). He was nominated by Reno-Sparks Branch First Vice-President Andrew Barbano. The winner will be announced in the Sunday, December 31, 2017, Reno Gazette-Journal. Thanks to all involved with the Branch for their membership and involvement and for the support we have received both in Nevada and nationally. Keep up the good work and the good fight. — AB

If Reform Fails: Health Care, Jobs and Unions — new power to the people on the public airwaves

The program premiers were available to every television set in the region because of a high-mileage media hybrid.

The shows appeared on both commercial and community stations. The non-corporate entity produced the events, commercial TV greatly expanded distribution.

Thus began an ongoing series of sane public interest programs which generate both entertaining heat and more than a little light.

Please spread the word and consider contributing to the cause online at ReSurge.TV.

You may also take the public option known as the U.S. Postal Service and send a check or money order to ReSurge.TV, P.O. Box 10034, Reno NV 89510.

Your contribution will help fund the distribution as well as ongoing efforts at developing new media, including a regional, non-corporate community radio station and the return of community television to Reno-Sparks-Washoe.

You are present at the creation of what I hope can become a new media model where the programming accurately reflects what's happening on the ground and the media impact is powerful enough to forcefully pass the message upward.

Thanks.

Be well. Raise hell.

Andrew

Thanks.

Be well. Raise hell.

Andrew

Nice to see Gomorrah South trying to keep up

By Trevon Milliard / Las Vegas Review-Journal 3-9-2014

Dear Mr. Milliard:
Working with my colleagues at the Reno-Sparks NAACP, I began delving into miraculous graduation rates in April, 2012. Manipulation mania quickly spread from Reno-Sparks-Washoe to southern Nevada and Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina. In a remarkable display of chutzpah, former Washoe County Superintendent Heath Morrison admitted cooking the books to the Charlotte Observer. (See my column of 6-24-2012.)
I have linked today's story, along with your previous piece of 4-10-2013, to my ever-expanding "We Don't Need No Education" archive.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Oct. 27, 1996, Barbwire began a six-month investigation into the labyrinthine intrigues of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN), now called the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). At the suggestion of chess grandmaster and author Larry Evans, most of the 1996 installments, as well as one involving university issues in the following year, were entered by the Sparks Tribune in two categories of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize competition. That ongoing interest in the affairs of higher education has never waned. You may use the NevadaLabor.com search engine to do a keyword search on the occasional treatment of university issues. You will also enjoy the ongoing comments of longtime University of Nevada-Reno journalism Prof. Jake Highton. Be well. Raise hell. — Andrew
