NOMINEE GUY RICHARDSON INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME |
So five uptight old Catholic guys in grim reaper robes don't like contraception.
Wonder if they thought that way back in college?
They are merely doing the will of
their god as channeled by high priests who have imbued in them the fear that
contraception, other than just-say-no, will send practitioners straight to hell
in a fiery handbasket.
All of this is so very United-Statesian.
Anything having to do with sex gets
treated as a magical mystery tour, our most exploitable and profitable taboo.
While the old shamans were arguing over procreational predilections, 52,000
babies invaded the country.
Most come from the U.S. banana republics of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. The following bulletin from the Alliance for Global Justice is instructive:
"The problem of the children migrants is blowback from U.S. policy in the 1980s when our government trained and funded Salvadoran and Guatemalan military and police to prevent popular revolutions and more recently when the U.S. supported the coup against President Manuel Zelaya in Honduras. Those countries were left with brutal, corrupt armies and police forces whereas Nicaragua, with its successful 1979 revolution, got rid of (dictator Anastasio) Somoza's brutal National Guard and formed a new army and a new police...
"Who consumes all those drugs that are causing all that violence and corruption in Latin America? Who has militarized the Drug War and is funding and training repressive militaries and police in the countries from which the children are fleeing? In both cases it is the United States....Nicaragua ranks second in Latin America and the Caribbean after Venezuela as the country that most reduced the gap between rich and poor in recent years."
The Reagan/Bush administration tried unsuccessfully many times to topple Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega during his earlier terms back in the '80s.
The U.S. military trained and funded
death squads, most notoriously those for El Salvador. Even American nuns were
raped and executed.
Nicaragua is the most Catholic of the four countries at 58.5 percent. The other
three are about half. Like the Supremes, huge percentages of those populations
apparently disfavor birth control.
To save their lives from drug gangs
and exploitation, the babies migrate north.
Perhaps it's time to pay for our sins and do something pro-life. Who better
than the religionauts at Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties
to lead us to moral rectitude?
Hobbies can't knock you up.
Now that corporations have religious rights, perhaps innocent refugees can instill
a conscience into our religious right.
Let those who so disfavor women's
rights take in the children from countries suffering from the bitter fruits
of non-contraception.
I've got just the name for the campaign. Let's replay the moniker of King
Ronald the Vague's surrogates in his clandestine dirty war to topple Ortega.
The Contras are back.

HONOR YOUR DON. Campaign season is upon us. I'm working to elect legendary Nevada photographer Don Dondero (1920-2003) for the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame.
His life's work appeared worldwide, including the Tribune and most probably every newspaper in Nevada.
Enlist in the campaign to install Big Don.
Please send me your memories and endorsements via e-mail or to P.O. Box 10034, Reno NV 89510. The deadline is the end of this month, so get it on.
The Barbwire got the late Reno Gazette-Journal columnist Guy Richardson elected in 2012.

TOO LEGIT
TO QUIT. The Barbwire's
ongoing investigation of phony Nevada graduation rates, now in its third year,
just got respectable. (Scroll down to Hiding in Plain Sight.) Read
it and weep, then review the series
for yourself.
TOAST ALERT.
Teachers' union gross
profits tax petition supporters and opponents would do well to review the
Barbwire
of Feb. 28, 2013.
Passage of the tax initiative could
easily lead to a successful court challenge that would at the same time blow
out not only the revenue hike, but also term limits and the state's worst anti-union
laws. Something for everybody. [UPDATE]

Now come queries about ballot questions. The Jan. 30 column brought a surge of inquiries about the Nevada State Education Association corporate tax petition on this November's ballot.

The medium that shapes public opinion needs at least one refuge where it is not filtered through the distorted green eye shades of prissy corporate accountants for whom profit is the only priority; where self-censorship is the journalist's normal work environment and where all sins of omission are tacitly encouraged and forgiven with the wave of a balance sheet.
This is important.
We've got work to do.
Be well. Raise hell. / Esté bien. Haga infierno. (Pardon my Spanglish.)
