"80 percent of success is showing up" Woody Allen
A few weeks back, I
printed three unbreakable rules
for lobbying the biennial Carson City petting zoo and beer bust.
Now comes a fourth that is obvious to all save some with PhD's: Show up.
The Washoe County School District
is going to the legislature to ask for an
increase in sales and property taxes for school repairs and maintenance.
They are 16 years and
a few million dollars short.
Local media have forgotten how we got to this rickety place.
In 1997, Clark County schools got a piece of the real estate transfer tax for
upkeep.
Washoe got shut out partially because of lawmaker irritation with then-superintendent
Mary Nebgen who apparently didn't much like kissing the rings of holy
legislators.
She had started off on the wrong foot by advocating for tax increases before
she even moved here to take the job.
Bad form in taxophobic
Nevada.
Nebgen later held a reception for lawmakers asking their advice on how to be
more effective. They uttered two words: "Show up!"
Apparently, Washoe could have gotten a piece of the transfer tax but WCSD reps
didn't make a case.
Almost two decades down ramshackle road, local schools are falling apart and
the district is not even asking for parity with Gomorrah South.
Amazing.
NEVER TRUST A PREACHING GUN RUNNER. The
dehydrated Frenchman Wayne LaPierre committed another sin of moral obtuseness
this week.
The National Rifle Association's flamer-in-chief torched President
Obama's remark that he hosts skeet shooting at Camp David.
Moonhowlers are now demanding proof, including 2009 photos and a Kenyan birth
certificate.
Newly outed messianic preacher LaPierre trashed Obama by again asserting that
the Second Amendment reflects God-given rights, the U.S. equivalent
of papal infallibility by the anointed black-robes of the Supreme Court.
Everyone knows that just like the pope, they are never wrong.
Such as their endorsement
of slavery forever just before the Civil War.
Alleluia.
NEVER TRUST A PR MAN. I sent the following
memo to KRNV TV-4 news last Friday. Still no reply.
"Several times today, your staff reported that 'Reno-Tahoe International Airport has never had a security breach.'
"As in follytix, one should never say never.
"Does the guy who drove his vehicle thru an open gate onto the tarmac about 30 years ago qualify as a security breach?
Or is there some public relations statute of limitations? Or does nothing count if it happened pre-9/11?"
Perhaps the aviation types justify the statement because the place was called Reno-Cannon International Airport when that yahoo went truckin' with the airliners.
"Apparently, those with institutional memories have been or should be institutionalized," I continued.
"Perhaps I've been doing this too damned long.
"Or perhaps you should never take the word of a PR person.
"And that includes me.
"Be well. Raise hell."

SUPPORT THE DONALD. Kudos for the kind words about Don Dondero (1920-2003) as we ramp up the campaign to install the photographic superstar in the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame.
His life's work appeared worldwide, including this newspaper.
Enlist in the campaign to install Big Don.
