Conservatives are dancing through the night nationwide, baying at the moon, praising lawmakers and Gov. Veto El Obtúsè for the most cutting edge, pernicious public education poison pill ever passed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Senate Bill 302 where you can make $5,000 a year just for yanking your kid out of school. (No Democrat supported it.)

Put yourself in the shoes of a struggling, impoverished family with four children looking at a $20,000 annual windfall just for relieving the school system of the burden of educating them. That's enough money to lift many households out of poverty.

Our schools have historically been a pathway to prison for Nevada's minorities. This will just make the process more efficient.

Creating more dropouts will also improve our already bloated graduation rates.

Regular readers know that the Barbwire was a full year ahead of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and two years ahead of the Reno Gazette-Journal in proving that Washoe and Clark County high school graduation rates had been cruelly inflated. Now, the Tribune can add another irony-dripping feather to this dubious cap: We scooped National Public Radio and the public television network by three years and two months.

Last week, NPR broke a series about phony graduation rates nationwide. They profiled 10 states including North Carolina where former Washoe School Superintendent Heath Morrison was run out of Dodge. (He admitted what he did here to the Charlotte newspaper.)

Nevada was listed among "18 states with requirements below what experts say students need for their next step in life."

Bottom of the barrel again.

This hasn't prevented the Washoe County school board from worshipping at the altar of Rosy Scenario and Pollyanna, patron saints of public relations.

Demonstrating that its collective tin ear remains impervious to logic, the trustees last week prematurely jump-started a new legislatively permitted process to select a smorgasbord of tax increases for the 2016 ballot.

After months of boring horror stories featuring impenetrable numbers mumbled by impenetrable people, a flamingly disengaged public understandably now labors under the vague impression that more than a billion in education tax increases should address our problems.

Suddenly comes word that we're giving parents $5,000 a kid to drop out, our graduation rates are questionable at best, bogus at bottom, borderline criminal at worst.

Did I say criminal? No wonder the guv and his goonies authorized spending almost a million on a new execution chamber at max.

Just planning ahead, speaking of which...

65 YEARS OF KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. Read Tribune alumnus Dennis Myers' tour de force about a tour de farce in the Feb. 5 Reno News & Review. His cover story "No Fair" provides a quick and vicious history lesson about Nevada government failing to take care of its people.

MYERS: Nevadans may well wonder why one of the state’s biggest and most familiar problems could be ignored so assiduously for decades, like an elephant in the room. In the end, the explanation comes down to a rule of thumb for politicians: Offending the affluent comes with consequences. Offending the working poor does not.

He also posits a tax solution which liberals may find quite surprising. (I resemble that remark.) Myers once again looks positively psychic. Actually, he just reads history.

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY: FEEL UP YOUR FIRE METER. The Reno Gazette-Journal did big spreads on three consecutive Sundays (Sept. 14, Sept. 21 and Sept. 28) on NV Energy smart meter fires. Welcome aboard. FIRE METER UPDATES: THE NEVADA FIRE MARSHALL'S INVESTIGATION concluded "don't worry, be happy." I'm still worried and will continue fondling NVE's precious equipment —> If your smart meter feels very hot, not just from sunshine, call 911.

In its Sunday 21 Dec. 2014 front page headline major story, the Reno Gazette-Journal published results of the NVEnergy-commissioned "don't worry, be happy" echo study. On 1-27-2015, the RGJ published an analysis based on veteran reporter Anjeanette Damon's review of more than 1,000 pages of documents. Barbwire bottom line: NVE handles this like auto manufacturers handle defects —> It's cheaper to pay legal settlements after people are injured or killed than to fix the problem.

Don'tcha worry 'bout a thing! If you can't trust your power company, who can you trust?

DIDN'T THEY MAKE A MOVIE CALLED "THE INCREDIBLES"? On 2-6-2015, the RGJ reported that the Public Utilities Commission has ordered NVE to hire an independent laboratory to review the material. UPDATE: The report said all is well. I still recommend feeling up your fire meter on a regular basis.
