Gotta hunch Czar Donaldov saw that old movie and took the great comic actor's advice to heart (if he could find his).

As presidential niece Mary Trump, PhD, noted in her new number one bestseller, our president made cheating a way of life, all the way down to hiring a ringer to take his college entrance exam. That's an easy game to play if you are richer than everyone else and thus possessed of the power to bankrupt a poor person with legal filings. Or you can grudgingly pay somebody off if they've got video of you doing what comes naturally.

Fields, of course, provides a bizarro burlesque of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famed observation that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

The November 3 effort-bending began long ago. Our banana republic's El Jefe always puts in a fixer sworn to loyalty to his don. Some get to be attorney general, some postmaster general, some go to jail, some get pardoned but the don vultures above it all, playing golf while sick little kids starve.

Dictators poison the world. Chinese health professionals knew that if they pressed the panic button on the Coronavirus, their careers were over. The whistleblower now lies dead of the virus. Czar Donaldov and his Communist BFF Xi Xin Ping hate bad news, preferring to ignore it and hope it just goes away. The game falls apart when PR presidents actually have to do something. But they poison their countries in the process.

An anti-feminist nutso lawyer killed the son of a New York federal judge and severely wounded her husband a few days ago. (He must have been a Lush Rambo listener, given his hatred of "femi-nazis," Limbaugh's principal hangup.) Neo-Nazis are coming out of the woodwork in Germany and planning mass murders. Xi and Trump and their proliferating fascist idols set the tone for such conduct. (Think Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Brazil and so very many more.)

And the erstwhile conservatives in this country are left with nothing but Richard Nixon's racist Southern Strategy, code for black bashing in the name of law and order. Sparks Mayor Ron Smith and his predecessor Geno Martini got suckered into that trap a couple of weeks ago. (Sparks City Hall Strikes a Blow for White Guys, Barbwire 7-22-2020 Sparks Tribune)

Last Saturday saw three civil rights demonstrations in Reno-Sparks and the next one happens Saturday, August 8, in front of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden NV 89423-4153.

Black Lives Matter Carson City will protest local Sheriff Bull Connor's (that's not a typo, Google at will) notice to the Douglas County Library that his office will no longer answer 911 calls at that location because the library director placed support of Black Lives Matter on the library board agenda. The community response was so virulent (but by no means one-sided), that the meeting was cancelled.

The lawman violated his oath of office, but we are well past the age of the rule of law.

Douglas County is the richest and whitest county in the High Desert Outback of the American Dream, an archaic alabaster bastion.

YOU HEARD IT FIRST ON THE BARBWIRE. If the National Football League can have the Buffalo Bills, named for a guy who slaughtered the original Americans' means of subsistence just for the thrill of it, then the DC NFL overlords should rename its team after the greatest athlete America ever produced, Olympic decathlon and pentathlon champion Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Tribe. He was also a prodigiously excellent football and baseball player. Nothing can make up for 500+ years of genocide, but The Washington JimThorpes can remind adherents to our national religion that we are finally beginning to get it.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD, PART DEUX. Newspapers are under siege and paid obituaries have emerged as Band-Aids on gunshot wounds. Obits as advertising often rape and pillage newspapers' role as the first draft of history. Instance in point (among thousands), last Sunday's Reno Kazoo-Journal eight-inch remembrance of Jose John Gastanaga, 79, who died in Washington state on July 5.

Neither Raley's nor Eagle Thrifty were mentioned. The former bought out the latter local grocery store chain in the mid-1970s. The Gastanagas were Eagle Thrifty Supermarkets' founding family. The longtime Sparks Pyramid Way store behind the Greenbrae Center was relocated up the street years ago and the site was vacant last time I looked. However, several of the original stores still exist, the Keystone and Mayberry locations in Reno, for example.

The Gastanagas were very active in the community. Jose (whom I never met) even bankrolled a syndicated TV special for local singer Frankie Fanelli, shot in this area and staged at the Pioneer Center.

They hired top gun Hollywood director Marty Pasetta to run the show. Pasetta helmed multiple Oscar and Emmy telecasts, as well as films about Frank Sinatra and Dr. King.

Alas and alack, nothing of the above appeared in the family obit.

FROM LAST WEEK'S BARBWIRE: MEATLESS MEETINGS. More than 13 years after former Reno-Sparks NAACP Presidents Dolores Feemster and Lucille Adin and I won a unanimous vote by the Sparks City Council to establish a diversity commission, last Monday the current council finally decided to study it again. So I guess I'll have to keep running periodic reminders in this newspaper until 2033.

The late Mrs. Feemster's grand-daughter, Adrienne, led a march to the Washoe school district administration building last Saturday demanding that the school board reverse its 4-3 decision from last May not to rename the former Hug High for "Mother Hug" and give it to the late Sen. Debbie Smith, D-Sparks.

UPDATE: The commission has been established. Who'da thunk it? We did it, Dolores. At last. (Please stay tuned.)

CHANGE THE DATE / SAVE THE DATE — Friday, October 23. For obvious reasons, I've moved César Chávez XVIII from March 31, the great labor leader's 93rd birthday. The event will be held at the Atlantis Resort, sponsored by Laborers' Union Local 169, the Reno-Sparks NAACP and the usual suspects. Doors open 5:30, dinner 6:30-ish. I don't know how I'll top my greatest hits of a cherried-out Aretha Franklin 1965 pink Cadillac convertible (with suitable live music) followed by Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak with suitable politics, but I'm working on it. Ex-Tribunite Dennis Myers will become the first journalist inducted to the César Chávez Nevada Labor Hall of Fame. [4-20-2019] — About 100 demonstrators from almost all the region's unions, local community service organizations and political activists joined Culinary Union members picketing Circus Circus in the late afternoon of April 18. A couple of CC suits came out to see what all the fuss was about, as if they didn't already know. In addition to the familiar union "contract now!" chants came calls for a strike against the Carano jocks. ¡Viva Huelga! ¡Sí se puede!

REAL NEWS DEPT. In January 2019, Culinary Union Local 226 defeated an attempt by Circus Circus-Reno to decertify (terminate) the union's representation of its workers. No word on whether management plans to appeal the result to the National Labor Relations Board which was recently put out of business for 35 days. Thank you, Czar Donaldov.

CONSUMER CONUNDRUMS: PINK SLIPS, PURGES AND PRUNING. I need to hear from recently purged Eldorado Hotel-Casino, Circus Circus-Reno and Silver Legacy employees. Barbwire spies report perhaps 100 workers got the ax just in time for the 2018 holidays. In the Tribune, at Barbwire.US and in the London Guardian, I have lamented the deepening desperation of renters here in Tesla Valhalla. I'm now getting complaints about medical and dental practices purportedly pruning their patient loads, cutting loose the less-lucrative. That's de facto malpractice but medical professionals are lawsuit-proof under Nevada law — unless you're rich enough to personally pay a few hundred grand in legal fees.
