He was appointed to make the service so bad that nationwide privatization for profit will look undeniable. The Postal Board of Governors needs to fire this yayhoo NOW! PROTECT OUR LETTER CARRIERS RALLY
IN CONJUNCTION WITH NRLCA CONVENTION (RURAL CARRIERS)

WHEN: MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 6:30 PM TO 8:00 PM
WHERE: CITY PLAZA ("BELIEVE" sculpture) 10 N. VIRGINIA ST. across from Reno City Hall, RENO NV

WHY: Support the Enough is Enough: Protect Our Letter Carriers Act (H.R. 7629/S. 4356)

Since 2020, there have been more than 2,000 crimes committed against letter carriers on the job. Many of these attacks involve a gun or another weapon. This bipartisan legislation would deter these crimes by:

• devaluing and securing key infrastructure
• increasing prosecution rates for these crimes
• strengthening sentencing guidelines for these crimes

We hope to see you there in support of our Union-Strong Letter Carriers!

A STORY SO HOT OFF THE PRESS
THAT IT MAY REQUIRE OPENING THE WATER GATES

8-2-2024 —> Today, Aaron C. Davis and Carol D. Leonnig of the Washington Post reported that there is reason to believe that when Trump’s 2016 campaign was running low on funds, Trump accepted a $10 million injection of cash from Egypt’s authoritarian leader Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. It is against the law to accept direct or indirect financial support from foreign nationals or foreign governments for a political campaign in the United States. Stay tuned.

$10M cash withdrawal drove secret probe
into whether Trump took money from Egypt
Political appointees rejected efforts to search for additional evidence investigators believed might provide answers, then closed the case.

"Five days before Donald Trump became president in January 2017, a manager at a bank branch in Cairo received an unusual letter from an organization linked to the Egyptian intelligence service. It asked the bank to 'kindly withdraw' nearly $10 million from the organization’s account — all in cash."

SPEAKING OF JUDGES. With the only Democrat and one other non-partisan dropping out, only non-partisan senior housing activist Marsela "Marsy" Kupfersmith (pronounced "cooper-smith") remains to oppose appointed Washoe County Commissioner Clara Andriola this November. She represents most of Sparks from downtown to the eastern county line and northward past Spanish Springs to Pebble Creek.

On July 3, Kupfersmith challenged the disqualification of her nominating petition in court where it awaits a decision by Washoe District Judge Kathleen Drakulich. Her honor may punt the issue to Nevada Secretary of State and chief elections officer Francisco Aguilar. Stay tuned.

David W. Toll and The Gold Hill News
A 50-Year Retrospective Of the Award Winningest Weekly in Nevada
June 15 and 16 at the Historic Bank of California
Gold Hill, Nevada

Gold Hill, NV (June 7, 2024) – Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the rebirth of the celebrated Gold Hill News in June of 1974, the historic Bank of California on Main Street in Gold Hill, Nevada, will host a comprehensive, historical display and multimedia presentations June 15 – 16, 2024, honoring the memory of famed writer and publisher David W. Toll and what was to become the State's most honored weekly newspaper during its amazing 99-issue lifespan in the mid-1970s.

In 1974, a small group of creative Comstock denizens with no money decided there existed a need for a new approach to, and outlet for, local and regional news and information to serve the citizenry of this historic and illustrious region of Nevada.  Writers David Toll and Peter Laufer, along with artist Buckeye Blake and radio legend Chandler Laughlin (aka Travus T. Hipp), conspired to revive the original Gold Hill News following a "92-year hiatus."  In the tradition of the high-spirited writing that characterized late 19th century Western journalism, the restored News combined serious news gathering with an overriding sense of fun, family, history, community service and a sly sense of humor.

The exhibit will showcase the News' richness of content through award-winning writing, editorials and letters, photography, contributors and columnists, art and humor.  The art and graphics were provided by a number of local accomplished artists including Buckeye Blake, Steven Saylor, JoAnne Johnson, Jim McCormick, Art Herman, Steve Powell and Edw Martinez.

In portraying life on the Comstock 50 years ago this three-year span covered the festivals, music, art, events, dances, and celebrations of the time.

The continuing saga of Joe Conforte and Mustang Ranch included the infamous shooting death of boxer Oscar Bonavena, for which the News had the scoop, story and interview with Conforte.

The paper chronicled the resurrection of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, from the first 116 feet of track to the arrival of a 1916 Baldwin steam locomotive.

And all the day to day stories concerning the people, children, pets and businesses of the Comstock community, comprising Virginia City, Silver City, Dayton and of course, Gold Hill.

The Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, which played a pivotal role in the construction of the mines and towns of the Comstock, was also well-represented in the pages of the News.

History buffs and folks who love the Silver State will not want to miss this event. So please mark your calendar and join the "Gold Hill News Gang" this June for a truly Golden Anniversary of a great adventure in Nevada newspapering.

The Bank of California is located at 1490 Main Street in Gold Hill.  For more information, please call or text Robin Cobbey, <goldhillnevada@gmail.com> 775-843-6217.

FEARLESS REAL WORLD PREDIXION 6-7-2024: The above column makes a ridiculous forecast which damn well may come true. You never know what fleeting whimsy may flit across the six-year-old mind of Czar Donaldov.

That said, I hereby go out on a limb (sane people make the mistake of judging the disturbed by normal parameters) to forecast that the Orange Crusher will name N. Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum as his running mate.

As NYTimes chief TV critic James Poniewozik wrote in his seminal book "Audience of One," Trump will never again make the mistake of appointing anyone like his late ex-wife Ivana. She became a media darling after he named her CEO of his Atlantic City casinos. She proved a quite capable executive, which is more than anyone can say about her hubby.

This explains the czar's naming of Mike Pence for veep in 2016 —- a colorless white guy who could never upstage His Wonderfulness even if he tried. Unfortunately for Czar Donaldov, Mr. Pence was a moral, law-abiding, loyal American.

The other three purportedly on T-Rump's rap and pillage list are Sens. Marco Rubio, R-FL; J.D. Vance, R-OH and Tim Scott, R-SC.

All of the above have shamelessly and publicly swilled down T-Rump's Kool-Aid, but only Burgum is bland enough to suit the Orange Crusher.

Bet on Big Mac Burgum to become T-Rump's next underwhelming Whopper.

And remember, you heard it first on the Barbwire.

Be well. Raise hell. Stay safe.

Subject: Update on Jacobs Entertainment Petition Regarding Bell Street and Alleyways
Date: 2024-02-27 15:11
From: Debra Whitlock-Lax <pdebz@bethelamesparks.com>

Dear Bethel and Community Members:

Thank you for the show of support recording the Bell Street Abandonment petition. The item in question has been removed from tomorrow's City Council agenda. It is my hope that Jacobs Entertainment will meet with me and the Mayor to discuss viable solutions that meet the needs of our community and satisfy Jacobs Entertainment's economic development project.

I believe city hall would like to hear public comment regarding the issue. However, it will not be discussed tomorrow. I will update you as we progress forward.

Warm regards,

Rev. Dr. Debra A. Whitlock Lax, Pastor

Dear Reverend Dr. Whitlock-Lax:

Thanks so much for this bulletin. Once again, Reno City Hall has demonstrated its endemic moral obtuseness — scheduling this hearing at the end of Black History Month.

Comedian Chris Rock got it right when he asked "has anyone noticed that they gave us the shortest month of the year?" Thursday's 2/29 leap day provides not even cold comfort.

I will help you all I can. I will move an item in my Wednesday Sparks Tribune column and post followups. As soon as it's on the press, I will send the column to the mayor, city councilmembers, city attorneys and city manager. The satire writes itself.

I will heavily wallpaper my targeted e-mail database about how Reno celebrates Black History Month. With a little luck, the irony will go viral and receive national attention. Been there. Done that. See BallotBoxing.US/ira.html/

I have searched the city council agenda and the accompanying 59-page staff report. There is nary a mention of the AME Church or its jeopardy.

The Tribune will post my column to its website later this week. I will immediately upload this advance to the front page of my flagship website, NevadaLabor.com and to my civil rights site, MississippiWestNV.org/ (With a blast from the past from two Reno-Sparks NAACP legends.)

Have you contacted individual council members? It's an election year.

I suggest that you include the council's group e-mail address in your future uploads: <publiccomment@reno.gov> Note in the subject line that the communication should be recorded as opposition to the Feb. 28 council agenda item No. C-1. (See above.)

The city's website states "Comments received after 4:00 p.m. the day before the scheduled Reno City Council meeting (in this case, Tuesday, Feb. 27) will be included in the record in closing public comment. You are encouraged to send in your comments early to allow for distribution to the Reno City Council for review."

Keep up the good work and the good fight.

Vaxx up, stay safe, pray for Ukraine and almost 100 other currently war-torn lands.

Dear Friend of Bethel:

I'm reaching out to you urgently about a critical matter that is threatening the very fabric of our community. Jeff Jacobs of Jacobs Entertainment is orchestrating maneuvers that imperil the historic Bethel AME Church Nationally Registered Historic Building. His efforts to persuade the City of Reno to designate certain streets as abandoned, thereby facilitating the expansion of his company's property line to encroach upon ours, are deeply concerning.

Let's be clear: our property is not abandoned. It is home to a longstanding church that has served our community faithfully for years. Yet, Jeff Jacobs' actions threaten to displace this sacred institution and erase an integral part of our cultural heritage and the African Methodist Church's historical presence of more than 119 Years.

We cannot stand idly by as Jacobs Entertainment seeks to undermine the integrity of our neighborhood and erode the rich tapestry of our history. That's why I implore you to join me and fellow Bethel members at City Hall on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 9:45 AM.

Your presence and voice are crucial in this fight to protect Nevada's oldest Black/African American church. We need passionate advocates like you to speak out against Jacobs Entertainment's unchecked expansionism and advocate for the preservation of our community's soul.

Please consider lending your voice for three minutes to underscore why we must resist Jacobs Entertainment's attempts to seize control of downtown. Together, we can safeguard our heritage and ensure that future generations continue to benefit from the invaluable contributions of Bethel AME Church.

Yes — just in case you are wondering whether Jeff Jacobs has moved other historically registered property....he has and wants to move our building, too.  It is currently being rented to a church.  We plan to make a Black Cultural Center in the future. Please — stand with me. Stand for justice.

Revenge of Trump's postmaster general:

Dear Proper Person:

This latest effort to move mail sorting to Sacramento from the northeastern California/northern & central Nevada regions raises serious constitutional voting rights questions.

Voting in Nevada is mostly done by mail today. See the position of the Washoe County Registrar of voters in the Reno Gazette-Journal (rgj.com) on Feb. 23 and Feb. 25, 2024. [ABOVE]

Why subject the USPS budget to endless expensive litigation? USPS budgets are already strained due to the longtime straitjacket placed on the system by privatizing pirates and their congressional minions. This debacle has been proposed before and turned down before.

This proposal will do nothing save provide manufactured "evidence" that the system should be privatized. And people like me who rely on prompt prescriptions by mail will suffer for the greed.

FROM A LONGTIME NEVADA LETTER CARRIER

Subject: Reno processing plant to Sacramento

Please complete this survey regarding moving Reno mail processing to West Sacramento by Wednesday Feb 28. It doesn’t take long. And share.

Thanks.
======

GO TO
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/mpfr-reno-nv

The business case is flawed. Moving Reno mail processing operations to West Sacramento will not provide on time delivery of the mail.

One of my main concerns is the delay in election mail and ballots when I-80 is closed because of frequent snow storms, fires and accidents. (Last year it was closed 15 instances for multiple days).

Trucks are also delayed frequently due to weather conditions and accidents.

The Washoe County registrar of voters is recommending voters don’t use the mail to return ballots in the event processing is moved.

This move will not save any money and will drive away mailers that use the USPS.

I also believe the Reno processing plant currently is a revenue generator for the district.

25-year Nevada Starbux unionization archive

News broke earlier this week about the sudden closure of the Career College of Northern Nevada. The bankrupt business school was established in the 1960s and has gone thru multiple ownership and name changes.

Some students were just days from graduation. I shudder to think how many will have gone into substantial long term debt with little to show for it.

I feel heartbroken for those who showed up to find only insult added to their injury: Signs posted on locked doors which gave notice of closure with "indefinitely" mis-spelled. In three places. In just a single word.

Bankrupt, indeed.

In memoriam: 62 years ago toward a lonely road

January 16, 1959, brought the births of Debra Joyce Donlevy/Carson High '77 (1959-1978) and Donna Leslie Cline (1959-1999). Their youth was cut in twain on the same night in 1978 within the loneliness of the High Desert Outback of the American Dream. Remember them fondly.
